Welcome Message from the President

Yasuo Hirai

March 2008

It is my great privilege to preside over the 50th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the newly refurbished Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo in Shinjuku from Friday, 26 June to Sunday, 28 June 2009. Both I and my colleagues at the Department of Cytology, the Breast Oncology & Gynecology Departments of the Ladies Center, and the Thoracic Center at the Cancer Institute Hospital, Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research are all eagerly working in preparation for this distinguished event.

For around 50 years, the Society's annual meetings have continually pursued a wide range of activities relating to cytology research, diagnosis and education across various disciplines including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology and pathology as well as raising social awareness of cytotechnology. These meetings have strived to make a meaningful contribution to cancer cell diagnosis particularly in the areas of lung, breast, uterine, thyroid, head and neck cancer and osteochondral tumors.

The theme of the Society's 50th annual meeting has aptly been titled '50 Years of Tradition & Advances'. The meeting will also address the rapid developments enabled by the adoption of new technologies such as molecular markers and diagnostic imaging with a focus on new understanding rooted in traditional cytomorphology from the perspective of cytology with practical clinical benefits for patients. We have also invited as special guest speakers a number of renowned academics from overseas to discuss new trends in the U.S. and from around the world including cytopathology expert Dr. Diane Solomon from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, an institute which has been responsible for pioneering significant breakthroughs in cytotechnology. The meeting will incorporate symposiums and workshops to address current themes and innovative techniques in the field of clinical cytology. We are also planning to hold a public lecture to commemorate the meeting's 50th anniversary and raise awareness among citizens on the benefits of early cancer detection.

I look forward to your active participation and generous support of the 50th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology.
